2009 MOD adult results

21.00 10th October: Mod Naiseanta Rioghail 2009 saw some of the big adult traditional music awards made today.

In the Open Fiddle contest, where competitors play a piece of their own choice, the Sutherland Cup for first prize went to Erin Smith from Aberdeen, with Cairena Campbell from Skye in second place.

The adult Piping contests were fascinating, with hot competition between a group of the top pipers. Oban’s wonderful Angus MacColl established his dominance wiht two firsts and one second – a stunning performance.

In the Hornpipe and Jig, Angus MacColl took first, with Pipe Major Gordon Walker from Ayrshire in second and Gavin Ferguson from Glasgow in third.

In the Ceòl Beag, the top two places were reversed, with the John T MacRae Cup for first prize going to Gordon Walker with Angus MacColl in second and Euan MacCrimmon from Inverness in third.

Then in the Ceòl Mòr, Angus MacColl came straight back to first, taking the James R Johnston Memorial Trophy, with Gordon Walker in second and Euan MacCrimmon in third.

Angus MacColl and Gordon Walker also shared the Sheilah J Nicol Memorial Trophy for the aggregate highest marks in the Ceòl Beag and Ceòl Mòr competitions.

These were thrilling contests.
