Thompson sees UK’s highest wind farm open near Glen Garry

The highest wind farm in the UK opened officially today, Monday 14th September. The Millennium Wind Farm is up on the hills between Glen Garry and Glenmoriston, approximately 8 km to the west of Fort Augustus.

It has 16 turbines, controlled remotely from Inverness and providing power to the national grid. Although the farm is owned by Italy’s Falck Renewables, the local community in Glenmoriston have an Equity share, ensuring that it benefits from the profits.

Dave Thompson, Highlands and Islands MSP, was delighted to be there. He used the opportunity to underline the importance of renewable energy development as a counter to climate change, noting that Scotland is playing a leading part in this field.

‘Did you know?’ Engineers and fitters have to train to abseil and to practice abseiling down outside from the top of the turbine towers, so that their safe exit is assured should the normal internal descent fail.
