Yesterday at the High Court at Kilmarnock, David Campbell (age 41) was ordered to serve 14 years in imprisonment after pleading guilty to the murder of Daniel Brennan (age 51) by repeatedly striking him on the head and body with a hammer on 7 March 2009 at a house in Inverkip.
Speaking after the sentence yesterday, Mr Justin Farrell, Acting District Procurator Fiscal for Greenock, said: ‘David Campbell has today been sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of murder, the most serious crime known to the law.
‘This was an unprovoked and vicious attack where the accused took away the life of an innocent and vulnerable man after breaking into his home in the middle of the night.
‘The plea of guilty was the result of several months of hard work and detailed preparation on the part of the dedicated prosecution staff in the High Court Unit for Greenock & Paisley, working closely with Strathclyde Police.
‘The investigation was a sensitive and complex one but, as with all cases of this nature, we as prosecutors were absolutely committed to gathering all available evidence to ensure that the accused was brought to justice for this horrific act which shocked the communitiy of Inverclyde.
‘We are in no doubt about the devastating effect which a crime of this nature can have on the family of the victim, and it will be a small comfort to Daniel’s family and friends that they have been spared the further trauma which a trial can cause. Our thoughts today remain very much with Daniel’s family’.
