Oban, Argyll, Scotland, says “Seal The Deal” NOW! The photograph above shows about half of the cross-generational group led by Sustainable Oban, who made their way at lunchtime today (21st September) to Oban’s North Pier to take part in a simultaneous global Climate Change Flashmob.
All over the world similar groups – 2,300 of them in 130 countries – were meeting, photographing themselves on mobile phones, sharing the images and making contact with each other. Then they simultaneously hit their political leaders by phone and text with the demand that this year, 2009, in Copenhagen in December they sign a fair, ambitious and binding climate treaty.
While this was happening, the media was reporting that global climate talks are in a shambles and the UN summit on Tuesday (tomorrow) is the best hope of reviving them. This meant that the timing of the multinational event today was fortuitous, underlining just how important it is for politicians to stop hedging and take action before it is too late.
With a televised programme last night showing many members of Peruvian hill tribes already dying of hypothermia because of drastically unseasonal temperatures, those who deny climate change are required to face the hard evidence.
Tonight, however there was good news, with Beijing announcing a target of intensified cutting of its emissions (rumoured to be by 50% by 2050). This puts America in the spotlight, after its refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol because China had not signed it. The detail of China’s proposals are to be announced n the morning (22nd September).
Good to see Argyll folk thinking globally and acting to enforce what they see as an urgent need for international agreement for the good of all..
