The Dalguise Fishings – a double bank beat of fishing which is said by the agents to have been the inspiration for Beatrix Potter’s book, The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher, has gone on the market.
By Dunkeld in Perthshire, it offers a rare opportunity to get hold of an attractive and productive double bank beat on the highly sought after Middle Tay. Unusually, a comfortable three bedroom cottage is also included within the sale.
The Dalguise Beat extends to 1¼ miles double bank and produces an average annual catch of some 113 salmon with a good spread of fishing by month and pool. The fishings benefit from a most attractive lunch hut (pictured above) and are protected by established woodlands. The property also includes two islands (one visible in the picture below) providing habitats for a variety of wildlife.

The Fishings were originally owned by the Tempest Family and were let on a seasonal basis in Victorian times. Then, for several years, they were let to the Potter Family. Daughter Beatrix spent many hours down at the river bank and local lore is that the inspiration for her tale of the misadventures of the frog, Mr Jeremy Fisher as he tried to fish for his dinner, came from holidays at Dalguise.
The only logical obstruction to the credibility of the local lore is that it would be unusual to find frogs in or beside such a fast flowing river. They lean more to stagnant ponds and canals. But the story’s an attractive one, the Heritage Centre nearby at Dunkeld has a standing Beatrix Potter exhibition and the Dalguise catches have been remarkably consistent.
The Dalguise Fishings stretches from Kincraigie Burn to Rotmell and marches with the Dalmarnock Beat. It is fishable both by boat and wading, as well as from the bank – which has excellent access.
The selling agents are CKD Galbraith and we understand they are looking for offers over £760,000 for the fishings and the cottage. You’ll have to create your own water lily pond and advertise for the descendants of Jeremy Fisher to do the leaping you’ll expect to see.
