We don’t know what the Slate Islands are on but it’s all action there at the moment.

Luing is running its ambitious inaugural Atlantic Islands Festival. Seil is the focus of attention on the BBC’s Beechgrove Garden programme tonight (8th July) with its newly created Community Drill Gall Garden. And Easdale’s Puffer Bar is majoring on the best local and west coast produce.

It is launching ‘Best of West Coast’ supper nights, starting on Saturday night – 11th July – from 7.30pm. The menu trumpets locally caught lobster, langoustines, squat lobster and crabs, along with Scottish scallops, Lismore oysters and smoked salmon from Ford on Loch Aweside.

Then there’s Kinlochlaich free range pork, salad leaves from Ardfern Organics and desserts made with Balvicar free range eggs, cream from Achnashelloch farm near Lochgilphead and cheese from the Isle of Mull and Kintyre. (Can’t tell you much we wish we weren’t writing this at the hungry end of a long afternoon’s work.)

If you can’t make this Saturday, there will be other chances. There is to be a series of thse suppers throughout the summer?

The full schedule of dates – all from 7.30pm – is:

  • Saturday 11th July
  • ]Saturday 25th July,
  • Saturday 8th August
  • Saturday 22nd August
  • Saturday 5th September

Then there’s the weekend of 25th and 26th September – the big annual weekend on Easdale, with its spirits-lifting world Stone Sksimming Championships, drawing people from several continents and cuntries. (We also have it on good authority that last year’s inaugural Old Tosser, Tony Gill from Ardfern, is returning in his RIB Moonraker [the name's Gill, Tony Gill] to defend his title.)

Anyway, the Puffer is rising to the occasion again, linking its promotion of west coast eatable delights in Special Stone Skimming Weekend suppers on Friday 25th September and Saturday 26th September.

No one needed another reason to get to Easdale for that weekend – but now there is one.

NOTE: With this sort of sourcing and cooking, booking is essential. Phone the Puffer on: 01852 300022.
