Driven by Iain Donald and staffed by a band of lively volunteers, Bute FM goes live at midday today (15th July 2009) under Iain as Station Manager.

The station will start by broadcasting a 2 hour breakfast show each weekday morning and supplemented by a ‘sustaining service ‘ from another station. Programme development plans are in place and will be brought on air progressively.

Strathclyde University’s community radio station, Celtic Music Radio, has been been supportive of Bute FM. It broadcasts on 1530MW in the Glasgow and also – the way to go – on the Internet. Bute FM intends to develop an online presence but that will be a little way down the road.

The new station joins Argyll’s other Community Radio stations:

  • Oban FM,  transmitting also to the Tobermory area on Mull and licensed as an Independent Local Radio (ILR) station because it preceded the arrival of the less powerful Community Radio services.
  • Argyll FM, based in Campbeltown and covering Kintyre and Islay and also licensed as an ILR for the same reasons as Oban FM
  • Dunoon Community Radio, the newest kid on the block before the arrival of Bute FM.
