Wildlife on the Isle of Mull is helping to sell Scotland as a destination to the US and Canada during Homecoming Year after a TV show last week.

Hits to the Holiday Mull & Iona website nearly doubled after the US and Canadian TV Network PBS broadcast a version of the BBC film ‘Eagle island’ with local cameraman Gordon Buchanan.

In fact online visits from North America overtook visits from the UK for the first time ever. Compared to the previous week, there was a ten fold increase in web enquiry traffic from Sunday, the night of the broadcast, through to Tuesday. PBS re-versioned the film calling it ‘Eagles of Mull’ and added their own narration in addition to Buchanan’s own voice-overs.

RSPB’s Mull Officer, Dave Sexton, who appears in the film and was scientific consultant on the production says: ‘Reading the comments from viewers on the PBS Forum makes you realise what an impact this film had with many of them now intending to visit.

‘The beauty of Mull, the people, eagles and other wildlife really seems to have affected viewers in North America. Let’s hope some of that now translates into actual visits to Mull and Scotland generally for Homecoming Year’.
