Amid continuing ructions over the proposed closures of properties and gardens in its care, the National Trust for Scotland has announced that it is making 200 staff redundant.

Andrew Bachell, Director of Conservation Services and Projects is said to have resigned in protest over the closure plans.

Then NTS Chair, Shonaig MacPherson allegedly found the Chairs of Members’ Centres and Friends’ Groups a lot less compliant than expected.

At the annual lunch she holds for these significant contributors to the work of the Trust, informed rumour has it that Ms MacPherson found herself faced with a series of ‘awkward questions’ and sustained and widespread criticism of her unsympathetic attitude. Reports indicate that she was ‘incandescent’ at having such questions put to her. Lese majeste rules in these revolutionary days – as does Darwinism: adapt or die.

Supporters of Argyll’s Arduaine Garden continue to exert serious pressure on the Trust – around 90% of whose mailbag is said to be Arduaine related.

Suggestions are that the NTS is to announce its final decisions on closures at the end of this week. We’ll keep you posted.
