Did you know about the Scottish Space School?

Jamie McGrigor does. The Highlands and Islands MSP was present at a degree conferral at Strathclyde University and expressed his admiration for the astronaut Bill McArthur whom he met there when Mr McArthur was presented with an honorary degree at the ceremony.

McArthur, a former colonel in the US Army, was selected to become an astronaut in 1993, having been working as an engineer for NASA. He launched into space for the first time in 1993 and has completed a total of 4 missions. Prestigious awards bestowed upon him include the NASA Space Flight Medal and NASA Exceptional Service Medal.

McGrigor praised Mr McArthur not only for these remarkable achievements, but also on his continuing support for the Scottish Space School (told you). This is an initiative that motivates young people to study science, engineering and technology. It was partly as a result of this project that the University of Strathclyde presented Bill McArthur Jr with his honorary doctorate in science.

Given Jamie McGrigor’s admirable interest in finding things out for himself, what’s the betting he’s having a word with Richard Branson even as we write?
