Fishermen spotted what they believed were bodies on the shores of a small island in Loch Awe at 11.30 this morning (31st May). Police divers were summoned to the scene and have recovered the remains of two bodies.
While there is no formal identification as yet, Strathclyde Police believe that they are likely to be the bodies of two of the four Glasgow pike fishermen who drowned from their boat on Loch Awe in fog in the early hours of Saturday 21st March.
The bodies of 47 year-old William Carty and 30 year-old Craig Currie were recovered at the time. The bodies now recovered are assumed to be 42 year-old Steven Carty, William Carty’s brother and 36-year-old Thomas Douglas, missing since the fatal accident.
Appropriate formal identification procedures are now being set in motion and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Following the recovery, Chief Inspector Andy Mosley said: ‘We believe at this stage that these two men may have been trapped under the water for some time. Remains in these circumstances often resurface after a period of time due to a number of factors, including water temperature and movement on the surface of the water. This process can also take longer in cold water lochs due to the extreme low water temperature. We are satisfied that our search has been as extensive as possible.
‘This has been a very distressing experience for the relatives and our thoughts are with them at this time. We hope that the recovery of their loved ones will offer them some closure’.
