Mulleach and international wildlife filmmaker, Gordon Buchanan, after 15 years away filming around the world, came back to make a film of a year on Mull for the BBC. The outcome – Eagle Island – has been rechristened Eagles of Mull by the PBS television station which transmits it tomorrow (Sunday 3rd May) at 8.00pm Eastern time.

From bis earlier life on the island, Gordon Buchanan was familiar with its golden eagles. A major reward for him on his return was discovering a species that had not been reintroduced before he left Mull: the white tailed sea eagle. Seeing these magnificent birds in the skies above his home island gave him something new in his experience of well known places.

In the film, Buchanan visits the familiar, the nostalgic and the new, weaving a new fabric of his relationship with Mull.   The spectacular landscape of this majestic Argyll island, its changing moods reflected in its seas and skies, its hills and coastline, catches the drama of the place. Its easy to understand how Mull manages the trick of playing host to thousands of visitors a year while never losing the sense that it belongs to itself.

The RSPB’s Mull Officer, Dave Sexton, centrally involved with Mull Eagle Watch at the hide at Loch Frisa and experienced in working with the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumn Watch teams, was Scientific Consultant on the film. You’ll see him pop up in it with Gordon Buchanan, working with the sea eagles.

Waiting to see what the film looks like in tomorow night’s premiere American transmission, Dave says: ‘It’s fantastic that Mull’s reputation as the No.1 wildlife watching destination in hte UK is getting this further international exposure.

‘Eagle island was also on ABC TV in Australia recently. We already get a lot of interest from the USA but during this major Homecoming Year we hope many more will see what a wonderful place Mull and Argyll is and decide to come and see us’.

  1. Michael Elcock Says:

I watched the PBS Nature programme ‘The Eagles of Mull’ last week. Gordon Buchanan’s filming was more than excellent. It captured the ambience of the island in all its weathers as I know it, and it revealed considerable character among the residents. But most important for his North American viewers were the beautifully understated comments with which he explained his observations and showed his sense of wonder. It was in fact the most human and humble of wildlife documentaries. Superb.
