Plaudits all round then, as Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) congratulates the region’s businesses which scooped  five food ‘Oscars’ at the 2009 Scotland Food and Drink Awards last week. One of the winners was Food From Argyll, which received the gong for ‘Success through Working in Partnerships’.

Other winners included:

  • Cocoa Mountain at Durness which was the people’s choice for the award for Food Tourism, this category was voted for by viewers of STV
  • Caithness and Sutherland business, Berry Good’s ‘Vodka Infused with Scottish Berries’ hit the spot for Best Drink
  • South Uist’s Salar Smokehouse won product of the year for its Flaky Smoked Salmon and was also recognised as top retailer in the fish and seafood category

Head of Food, Drink and Tourism at HIE, Chris Taylor says: ‘The Highlands and Islands has an excellent reputation for its range and quality of food and drink products.  When you add to this the unique challenges that exist for producers working in remote or rural areas, it makes each and every achievement of this kind so special.

‘We have many innovative people working in the Highlands and it is great to see their efforts rewarded.  HIE is keen to continue to work with food and drink businesses within the region, helping those with the potential to enjoy significant growth to maximize their potential’.

Kerrie Redington of HIE, who has worked with the innovative businesses making up Food for Argyll says: ‘Food for Argyll’s success is well deserved.  It has been hugely successful at bringing businesses together to deliver high quality food products at a wide range of events. They have all worked together, sharing skills and resources which has resulted in the excellent Food for Argyll marquee providing food for festival goers across Scotland.

‘The benefits of creating a partnership like this is clear to see and the individual businesses, including Inverloch Cheese, Barbreck Farm, Loch Fyne Oysters and Bumble Puddings have benefited from collective marketing and branding, increased sales and an opportunity to sell their products further afield’.
