As an opener, this is a grand gesture indeed. The new Colintraive  Heritage Centre is mounting an exhibition covering the story of Colintraive and its surrounding area over a period of 150 years. There are letters, maps, photographs and drawings, all illustrating a way of life typical of the west coast of Scotlamd.

Crofting, farming, forestry and fishing – these are the stock occupations of the rural west of Scotland, supported by the passenger steamers and – thanks to Neil Munro’s Parahandy stories, the now legendary Clyde puffers, serving and linking small, remote, rural shoreside communities. This exhibition will tell you a lot about the ways of life these occupations imposed and assisted.

Saturday 9th May will see the opening of the Heritage Centre and the slogan of the organisers is: Connect with your ancestors. Come home to Cointraive.

Culture Minister, Michael Russell MSP, will perform the opening ceremony at 2,00pm on 9th. Everyone is welcome to attend. Head for the old workshoip and stable oppostite Colintraive Village Hall.

The heritage centre sounds like a great idea. What a pity I live far away in New Zealand. My grandfather Neil Mains farmed at Ardachuple in the late 1700′s to about 1832. He was an elder in the Kilmodan church and we think he died about 1832, but have been unable to find a burial site. If there is someone in the community with history of the farm, church or family, I would love to hear from them.
