1.7 million UK Tiscali subscribers will now take TalkTalk’s UK subscriber base to 4.25 million, following the purchase of Tiscali’s UK interests by Carphone Warehouse for around £235 million.
This gives the company 25% of the UK’s households and puts it in second position only to BT, whose business base is huge.
Tiscali’s current subscribers will, for the time being, keep their existing tariffs, their current email addresses and the same customer service contacts. This avoids confusion over potential loss of service and panic over any need for immediate system changes.
The intention, though, is progressively to switch Tiscali customers to Carphone Warehouse’s billing and cistomer service systems over a two year period. The company’s CEO, Charles Dunstone, says that the main message for Tiscali clients is that their service will continue and improve.
Industry opinion is that the takeover is likely to be good for Tiscali subscribers because its service has been deteriorating. There is though, concern that Talk Talk will have a lot on its ands since it also owns AOL, another deteriorating service.
Recent entrants to the market, Sky and O2 are offering serious challenges to existing providers through their highly efficiengt customer services – something new for the UK.
