For Argyll has reported on the liquidity problems some of Donald Trump’s enterprises are facing – such as his gambling complex on Atlantic City, the US east coast’s answer to Las Vegas. Like everyone else, the bite on credit is hurting and may well see serious trouble in some of his standalone companies.
With Argyll’s Loch Lomond Golf Club in trouble and considering a members’ buy-out (as For Argyll has reported) the Trump question is – and remains – whether his business difficulties will delay or put into cold storage his controversial plans for the high-end golf resort planned for Balmedie in Aberdeen. Whatever the objections, there is no doubt that, should the project go ahead, its impact on the local economy will be strongly positive -no bad thing in these difficult days.
Never one lacking the imaginative and in-your-face strategy, Mr Trump’s response to doubts is to announce that he is planning to spend a lot of time in Scotand and has hired six local companies to restore and renovate the 14th century Menie House on the estate as a personal residence for him and his family. Menie Park Lodge, also om the estate, is also to be renovated.
His personal fortune is into the billions and is firewalled from the fate of his companies so the Menie House initiative is a clever statement of intent. It will also bring early work to local companies at a time when they need it. However, it would be naive to read this as guaranteeing that the golf resort project will proceed on the planned timescale.
