No emergency cover as Scottish Water staff strike from Christmas Eve to 5th January

Following a 24 hour walk-out by 800 workers in November in a still running pay dispute, a meeting between Scottish Water and the representative trade unions failed to come to agreement yesterday (22nd December).

The three unions concerned – GMB, Unison and Unite – now say that their members will strike from 1600 GMT on Christmas Eve until 5th January. This means that normal emergency cover from staff normally on standby to respond to bursts, flooding and sewer failures, will not be in place over the holiday period and into the New Year.

Scottish Water says it has contingency plans and has offered to meet the unions again before the strike action takes place.

The company saw its latest offer of 3.75%, up from the previous 3.5%, as a positive step in the dispute but the Unions feel that it can afford a better offer.
