Argyll black ice alert: Lorry Jack-knifes on Black Ice in Cowal Today

Sketchy reports are coming in that there is a significant black ice problem in South-west Cowal this morning. A lorry is reported to have jack-knifed on the A886 between the Clachan of Glendaruel and Strachur this morning having been turned back from the single-track over to Dunoon where there had been an accident earlier this morning (no detail on this yet). Residents are being advised to stay at home as the roads are considered lethal at the moment. The question is being asked: where were the gritters this morning?

10.45: Gritters spotted on the road to Tighnabruaich. The jack-knife seems to happened just before Garvie Farm, a noted danger spot for black ice. Three years ago at the same spot a Nissan Micra left the road and ended up on its roof with significant neck injuries for the driver. His wife and children were unhurt.

Mid Argyll is also reporting black ice on roads. Last night three cars left the road on the A82 between Furnace and Inveraray. Two turned over onto the roof. One of these went on fire but the woman driver managed to extricate herself. Inveraray Fire Brigade set out to attend the burning vehicle and were virtually on the scene when the second vehicle turned over in the same area near Douglas Water.

There is no information yet from the relevant authorities but our advice is not to drive unless you must and certainly that, wherever you’re driving in Argyll today, you should anticipate the presence of black ice.
