It has been confirmed today (4th December 2008) that 20 HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) offices across Scotland are to close. Three are in Argyll – the worst hit of any Scottish local authority.
Argyll revenue offices now confirmed for closure are:
- Dunoon – Auchencraig
- Oban – Mathieson House
- Rothesay – King Street
Argyll’s constituency MSP, Jim Mather, along with Alan Reid MP, has called for an immediate reconsideration,
Mr Mather says: ‘I find it difficult to understand the thinking behind the announcement of this decision at this time. The economic climate has changed starkly since the consultation process driving this was launched. We are now heading for a deep recession and this seems to be a singly inappropriate time to be slashing HMRC jobs and services. As well as being a bitter blow to staff working for HMRC these cuts will impact upon businesses and the public at a time when local expertise and accessible well-resourced services are most needed.
‘I am also appalled that this is so disproportionately damaging to Argyll & Bute and to Scotland. Scotland is losing 21% of its offices and Argyll & Bute is losing 3.2% of the UK total when we have only a fraction of 1% of the UK population.
‘I join with my colleagues at Westminster, who are calling on UK Ministers to reconsider this decision’.
