Water supplies to around 5,000 homes and businesses in Helensburgh, Argyll’s biggest town, have been cut off because of a serious burst water main.

Scottish Water has engineers working continuously since yesterday evening on the inlet main from the Blairlinnins Water Treatment Works to the Helensburgh Low service reservoir near the town. Repairs are expected to be completed by this afternoon (Tuesday 18th November). Supplies should be restored to normal by early evening but, as usual, it will then be necessary for residents affected to boil water for a period to be advised. For Argyll will carry situation updates as the day goes on.

Bottled water is being distributed at various locations in the town. Scottish Water has also brought in 60 static tanks to supplement emergency supplies.

Bottled water collection points are at:

  • the swimming pool car park in West Clyde Street
  • Kidston car park in Rhu Road Lower,
  • Victoria Halls car park in Sinclair Street
  • Churchill Square.

A spokesman for Scottish Water says: ‘Very poor ground conditions have made this repair extremely difficult. The health and safety of our workers is paramount and that is why it has been necessary to take extra care in excavating this pipe and making the repair. We estimate that the repair will be made by early afternoon, however given the difficult conditions we will monitor this closely to better understand and manage the impact of any further delays’.

18.40 update: We have had no further information from Scottish Water since the news bulletin above so assume that the repairs are still ongoing and that bottled water is still the only available supply for affected homes and businesses. As soon as we hear from the company, we will post the news here – at whatever time it comes in to us.
