Tiree Wave Classic this weekend – crofters prepare to repel invaders

The internationally recognised surfing event – the Tiree Wave Classic, takes place on Argyll’s sunshine isle of Tiree this Saturday and Sunday (11th and 12th October). Crofters on the island are gertting defences in place to prevent camper van drivers and visitors tramping over the island’s fragile machair – the beautiful wildflower meadows on the shoreline that bind the sand dunes together. This happens largely through a mixture of clash of cultures and the carelessness many people demonstrate with other people’s environments when they’re only passing through.

Good luck to the crofters. Good luck to the visitors for a sunny and fun weekend. And good luck to the competitors charging down Tiree’s legendary surf.
