More problems at Islay’s Port Askaig pier as fishermen consider direct action

With all the problems the Isle of Jura is facing over limited access casued by the deeply flawed new pier at Port Askaig in Islay – incapable of supporting safe use by the small ferry to Feolin on Jura – local fishermen are highlighting additional failures. They describe the berthing area as ‘too shallow’ and see thier boas a risk from steels sticking out of concrete and from boulders. And the pier lighting obscures a navigation light used to guide in approaching ferries. Argyll and Bute Council has said it would address these known problems but with no action yet taken, the fishermen see themselves as left only with the option of direct action. They are considering a blockade, obstructing ferry movements in and out of the port.
