Representatives from Argyll and Bute Council have presented to Furnace Community Council the final summary report on the feasibility study into the possible construction of a new pier at the village. The appraisal was commissioned by the Council with its partner, Argyll Timber Transport Group. The proposed pier would enable sea transport of harvested timber, in line with the Forestry Commission’s commitment to keep the roads as free as possible from timber lorries. The Scottish Government’s Freight Facilities Grant team has indicated that a potential award of £3.4 million could be made from the grant towards the total estimated cost of £5 million at 2007 prices. This would be subject to more detailed investigation and on condition that private business raises the remaining £1.6 milion required for the work. The full version of the report - unusually readable - can be found on the Furnace For Argyll website alongside a more detailed news piece. It gives very interesting facts about timber harvesting and haulage in Argyll, about the environmental benefits of the proposal and on the strengths of Furnace as a natural and sheltered harbour.
