The inaugural scheduled commercial flight into Colonsay aerodrome arrived on the morning of 17 June, and was greeted by a substantial gathering of well-wishers. A very smooth landing in a gusty 10 knot cross-wind was admired by all present, and the first incoming passenger was the author, broadcaster and Colonsay aficionado, David Johnston.
Miss Katie Gillespie, a pupil of Kilchattan Primary School, welcomed pilot Julie Angell of Highland Airways on behalf of the island, and presented a small commemorative gift. All present were invited to inspect the Islander aircraft at close quarters, which will become very familiar to the children after they advance to Oban High School.
The 25-minute flight from Connel was described as a “magnificent” experience. It is to be hoped that this new service will now enable many people to escape the drudgery of their mainland life, if only for a few hours.
