Commanding Officer of the Argylls injured in firefight in Helmand

Lieutenant Colonel David Richmond, Commanding Officer of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and one of Scotland’s most senior soldiers, is being flown back to the military unit at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham for treatment. He was shot in the leg during what is described as ‘an intense firefight’ in Helmand where enemy fire took him down near the no man’s land town of Musa Qala which was taken back from insurgents by British forces during a visit by Gordon Brown last December. The Ministry of Defence have given no details of the incident but it is believed that it happened while soldiers from the Argylls - now the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland - were engaged in operations in the Musa Qala area.
