120 men of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ ‘Charlie’ Company - four weeks after arriving for a seven month deployment - have led a major offensive to cut off the Taliban’s supply routes into Helmand Province for weapons and fighters. They provided the firepower and the operational support to get several hundred American Marines across the Helmand River and into ‘bandit country’ of desert and scrub. This has been the Taliban’s playground since 2001. Lieutenant-Colonel Nick Borton, a Royal Highland Fusilier commanding the Argyll’s company confirmed that the operation had been carried out without ‘incident or loss’. Until this action, the Scots have been keeping watch on the no man’s land of Garmsir.
